Flashing BIOS when the system is unable to boot up
Last Update : 2012/03/22 16:49
I have recently assembled a system with this motherboard. When I tried to power on the system, the fans were running; however, there was nothing showing on the screen. After I browsed the ASUS support site and followed some troubleshooting tips, I found out that I need to update the BIOS. How do I update the BIOS when I cannot boot up or get into the BIOS setup menu?
Your motherboard features a USB BIOS Flashback function that is designed for flashing the BIOS in this situation!
Please follow the steps below to flash BIOS using USB BIOS Flashback. USB BIOS Flashback offers the most convenient way to flash the BIOS. Just plug in USB storage and push the dedicated button for 3 seconds, and the BIOS is automatically flashed using standby power.
*You may update BIOS to have the better compatibility with new CPU or devices.
System requirement:
* 1x working PSU
* 1x ordinary USB pen-drive formatted in FAT16 or FAT32
* 1x ASUS X79 motherboard featuring USB BIOS Flashback function
*NO CPU, NO DRAM, NO external equipment or software is required.
1. Download the BIOS file from the ASUS service website (www.asus.com). (Pictures below are for reference only.)
2. Rename the BIOS file as follows:
P9X79 WS => P9X79WS.ROM
And save it to the root directory of the USB portable disk.
3. On the rear I/O port, plug the USB disk to the USB 2.0 port or ROG Connect port with the WHITE interior.
4. Hold the USB BIOS Flashback button/ROG Connect button for 3 seconds till the LED begins to blink, then release.
5. When the signal starts to blink, the flashback function begins. The signal blinking rate accelerates as the updating process progresses.
6. Wait till the LED STOPS blinking, then BIOS flashback is completed.
Note:
1. Do not unplug portable disk, power system, or press the CLR_CMOS button while the BIOS update is ongoing. Otherwise the update will be interrupted. In case of interruption, please follow the recommended procedures again to complete BIOS update.
2. If the light flashes for five seconds and turns into a stable lighting, this means that the BIOS Flashback is not operating properly. This may be caused by: (1) improper installation of the portable disk, or (2) error in file name or incompatible disk format. If this is the case, please restart the system to turn off the light.
3. Updating BIOS may have risks. If the BIOS program is damaged during the process, causing the system unable to reboot, please contact the local service center for further assistance.
